Understanding Combat Wrestling

Combat wrestling offers a middle ground between No Gi Jiu Jitsu and Sambo, in many ways bringing in the best elements of both. Although Combat Wrestling has been producing incredible talent in Japan for a long time, it has only been an international sport for 4 years. It allows a wide variety of submissions, but places a high degree of emphasis on throws and takedowns by scoring them based on quality and amplitude.

The full rules can be found here, but below will follow a quick primer.

  • Fighters wear wrestling or sambo shoes, red or blue shorts, and a matched or neutral rashguard top.

  • Fights are won via submission, by achieving a 12 point margin, or by having the most points at the end of five minutes.

  • Takedowns are awarded 1, 2, or 4 points depending on quality (see video below for examples.)

  • 1 point will be awarded for mount or back control.

  • Pins will be awarded 1, 2, or 4 points based on duration.

  • Matches will be restarted standing if a pin or submission is not applied within 30 seconds.

  • The use of full guard is not allowed.

  • The use of heel hooks is not allowed.

  • The use of head scissors, can openers or other spinal locks are not allowed.
